Over the coming months, Valley Child will be highlighting different Early Years programs in the Comox Valley. This month we’re looking at Jumpstart Preschool.
Jumpstart Preschool is located at Courtenay Elementary School and is sponsored by the Comox Valley Child Development Association. The program runs Monday through Friday, from 8:45 – 11:15 and children can attend 3, 4 or 5 mornings a week. Jumpstart, like most preschools, provides a chance for children aged 3 and 4 to have the experiences they need to get ready for kindergarten.
Jumpstart is staffed by trained early child educators who know that children learn best through their play experiences. This play-based learning is about providing opportunities for children to practice and learn a variety of skills. What does this actually look like? It can be best summed up by the scene below of the dinosaur family having a meal that the Jumpstart children created:
What is being learned here ?
- The value of families, even dinosaur ones, having meals together. (Family traditions.)
- If someone is talking, it is important to pay attention. (Social skills.)
- If there are 3 waffles and 3 dinosaurs, everybody gets an equal amount. (Sharing.)
This picture makes me smile every time I look at it because it shows the imaginative play that happens when 3 and 4 years olds are given different things to play with! Plus, the sunglass-wearing dinosaur cracks me up.
