With all this rain we’ve been having in the Comox Valley, it seems like a good time to brainstorm some indoor activities! Here are some ideas to get you started:
1) Masking-tape Tic-Tac-Toe:
Just lay the tape out on the floor in 2×2 strips and find some coloured blocks or containers to use in the game.
Other masking tape ideas: making up a hopscotch grid, creating a target for a bean bag tossing game, putting a “balance-beam” line down the hallway for kids to try walking along.
2) Fort building:
Grab a sheet and throw it over your kitchen table for an instant fort. For some reason, regular activities like reading or colouring are so much more fun under cover!
Other fort ideas: if you have a tent for camping, set it up in the house. Grab the sleeping bags and get cozy!
3) Box play:
Gather different size boxes and explore which ones can either fit inside each other or stack up in a pile.
Other box ideas:
Have an assortment of soft items that can be tossed into the box from a distance and play box-it ball; take the ends off the boxes and practice rolling or kicking a ball through the tube.
Something to remember is that children often use their creativity to take activities in a completely different direction – and that’s great! They’ll come up with ideas that us adults never would have thought of.
One last suggestion – if you’re anything like me, you will hear all sorts of ideas for activities and then promptly forget them, so you may want to keep a little “Emergency Rainy Day Activities” list on your fridge and add to it as ideas come up.
